I am an artist, designer, and aspiring landscape architect / urban planner. 2008 will mark the end of my year-long sabbatical from fine art.The choice to break served a dual purpose. First, to take a breather from the whirlwinds of a solo show, several group shows, 2 curated shows, and the first steps in a major career change from graphic artist to draftsman. The break allowed me to polish my skills in AutoCad, work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and take a course in AutoDesk's Building Information Modeling (BIM) software called Revit. The evenings were dedicated to researching the field of landscape architecture. Fortunately, the Las Vegas Valley Water District (LVVWD) recently opened the Springs Preserve which consists of *180 non-gaming acres in the heart of Las Vegas that commemorates Las Vegas' dynamic history and provides a vision for a sustainable future. With a sketch book and pen in hand I was able to walk through xeriscapes, observe wetlands in the desert, and experience buildings that effectively used the environment to maintain a comfortable temperature. I attended several fascinating lectures at the architecture library on sustainable design and future trends at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), my alma mater. To relax I cracked the spines of some books on Landscape Architecture and used my Saturdays to sip some coffee and read The Economist magazine. Currently, I've narrowed my selections for graduate schools to obtain a Masters in Landscape Architecture (MLA) and have focused my portfolio on designing a Leadership in Energy and Environmental (LEED) compliant master planned arts district for the Las Vegas valley in response to the problems of our district's gentrification. GIS Revit BIM Springs Preserve Known as the birthplace of Las Vegas, the site of the Preserve was once home to bubbling springs that were a source of water for Native Americans living here thousands of years ago.
