Artist Statement

My graphic design work is a great catalyst to my fine art work. The experience of working for clients and trying to withdraw how they want iconographical representation is an extensive process of asking questions, instinct, and faith. This process and dialog is what I use to make my work.

Biography

Michael Todoran was born in Torrance , California in 1975 and raised in West Los Angeles , California . His earliest exposure to art stems from walking through the notorious graffiti saturated “Motoryard” in West Los Angeles . In 1995 in search of adventure & discipline he acquired both when he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. His experience as a sailor; first in the Pacific Northwest and later through the Hawaiian, Samoan, and various atolls sprinkled in the heart of the South Pacific embedded a liquid aesthetic deep within his internal dialog. In 1999 his academia path at the University of Nevada , Las Vegas was approached with a military “gung-ho” attitude where he immersed himself intellectually in assignments & lectures. Unafraid to absorb knowledge Todoran relentlessly asked questions from visiting artist like Jeff Koons and Sue Coe. Todoran's traditional mediums of painting, sculpture and drawing laid parallel with his professional graphic design. In 2003 Todoran's most acclaimed and ambitious work would be a hand drafted font on four sheets of 24”x 36” of vellum, which he submitted for his Bachelor of Fine Arts thesis. Currently Todoran's transition from student to professional combines his collective experiences and recalls his life as a sailor by exploring the movement and forms of liquid with deep cyans in his “Underwater Pools” photography and painting.
